Running Shoes for Goofy’s Race and Half Challenge

Purple and Turquoise Running ShoeThe one thing that can hold me back from finishing my mileage goal, besides my right knee which seems to be less and less a problem lately, are my shoes. It is so hard to find a shoe that will offer support, but not too much, cut down on rubbing which ultimately leads to blisters and look cute at the same time. As a result I find myself buying and trying new running shoes. I can go through a pair every 4 months if I average 40 miles a week. In the past I have purchased some sort of trail runner usually put out my Pearl Izumi but as of late I have found that the less of a shoe there is, the better my knee feels.

Yesterday I was at a local Old Navy when I saw these shoes. They are such a vibrant color and happy that I thought they would be perfect to try out and see if they will work for long distances. I want something happy and bright to wear for the Goofy’s Race and Half Challenge and if these can stand up to at least 13 miles then they might be candidates for at least the Walt Disney World Half Marathon. I wore them this morning for 6 miles and they faired alright. I have a slight blister on my pinkie toe but other than that they were great. Over the weekend I am going to do my long run and then I will know if they will stay in my training rotation.

Goofy's Race and Half Training Day 5

Fruit PlatterEnjoying a nice rest day. Although it is my rest day, Maverick told me that it is his training day and he wanted a mile this morning so I went with him. We explored the neighborhood, checked his "peemail" and them came back to relax in the air conditioning. Tonight I might head out with my husband for a few miles around the neighborhood but as of right now, just enjoying the rest.

My legs feel better today then they did yesterday so I might run tomorrow I will have to see how I feel in the morning.

One of the things, besides getting miles I have noticed changing with my training is what I want to eat. Lately I have been craving fruit. I am not sure if it the sugar or what that makes me want fruit but when I think about what to eat, well it is usually some sort of fruit. Speaking of which I think I will go and get some... fruit! :)

Goofy’s Race & Half Challenge Training Day 4

Day 4 of my Goofy 2013 was a little warmer than yesterday but it was a nice morning with lots of sunshine.  I got out a little late this morning but was still able to get my 5.52 before it got too hot and humid. Which was a surprise considering my legs were really sore from yesterday's squats.

GoofyIn the evening Norwood joined me on a walk around the neighborhood. I did not get the chance to do any yoga today but I am happy with the mileage I got today. I actually wanted to make today a run day instead of just walking but yesterday's workout took its toll on my legs. Perhaps I will make Saturday a run day, tomorrow is a rest day.

I was able to bust out my new "Running Playlist" today and I think this one is a keeper. Lots of pop, some punk. Very happy, peppy sort of list. I will share it here soon.

Goofy's Girl: Goofy’s Race & Half Challenge Training Day 3

Goofy's Girl: Goofy’s Race &Half Challenge Training Day 3:
Walt Disney World Marathon 2012
2012 WDW Marathon: Animal Kingdom
Back to the road this morning for 5.13 miles. It was a wonderfully cool day with lots of clouds which made it nice to get out a little later. By 7am I was out on the road doing a loop around the neighborhood and listening to Emma by Jane Austen. My back was a little stiff this morning but other than that knee is feeling good and I have high hopes of reaching 40 miles this week, which if accomplished will be the first 40 mile week in a couple of months. A little yoga some squats and sit-ups and this day has been very productive.

Besides getting 6 miles Thursday-Sunday I also need to plan out what I will be listening to the rest of the week. I just finished putting together an awesome Running Playlist, but I need to pick out an audio book as well. After Emma I am thinking something contemporary perhaps the Wolves of Mercy Falls Series.

Training Completed:

Walking Miles: 5 (morning)
Yoga: Sun Salutations (30 minutes)
Squats: 100
Situps: 100

Goofy's Girl: New Course for 2013 Walt Disney World Marathon

Goofy's Girl: New Course for 2013 Walt Disney World Marathon:
Since 2013 will be the 20th Anniversary of the Walt Disney World Marathon there is a new course that will allow for the special event that is supposed to take place at mile 20. The majority of the course appears to be the same as the previous year. The one major change to the course is the trek through Wide World of Sports. I look forward to the new course and I can only hope that we will spend less time running on compost piles and sewer treatment plants.

Below you can find the course maps for all the races to take place during the 2013 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend January 12-13, 2013.

Goofy’s Race & Half Challenge Training Day 2

Golden Buddha
Day 2 of training is all about resting after day 1. To my surprise I awoke without any knee pain and  just a little blister on the bottom of my foot that does not even hurt. However to be sure that I do not have any more problems with my knee I have deemed today a rest day. Which means no walking or running but lots of yoga. Normally I try and get anywhere from 40-60 minutes in but today it is all about the yoga which means that I will get in 120 minutes (spread out over the day in two sessions). One session will be a Power Yoga session with fast paced Vinyasa and the other will be a gentle session with long holds of some of my favorite poses.

Goofy’s Race & Half Challenge Training Day 1

Thousand Trails Orlando

I have given myself about 7 months to prepare for the 2013 Goofy’s Race and Half Challenge. Ideally I would have liked to start my training on June 1, 2012 but here we are at the 18th of June and this is officially my first day of serious training. After reading over Jeff Galloway’s Training plan I decided to create one similar but unique to me. Based on my Walt Disney World Marathon training I know that I need at least 2-3 days off a week, only if the week has any miles 10 and over. So I hope to stagger training in a way that every other week I will have at least 2 days in which I reach over 10 miles. On average I can maintain 7 miles a day six days a week.

Also I want to add to my training plan a yoga schedule because after hurting my knee at mile 16 in the 2011 Walt Disney World Marathon I know I need to have more yoga in my life to keep not only my muscles stretched but also my ligaments and tendons. I try to do yoga every day of the week, varying the types of yoga I will do.

Today’s plan was to get at least 10 miles, not worrying about time and just taking it nice and easy in the morning. Then I would add in some Yin Yoga for my joints at night (40-60 minutes).

Training Completed:

Walking Miles: 12 (10 in the morning, 2 at night)
Yoga: 30 minutes of Yin Yoga

Listened To:
Emma by Jane Austen
Training Course:
Roads that lead to a lake, not much change in elevation

Goofy Race and Half Challenge 2013

Amanda and Goofy 2000 by Amanda's Weekly ZenFor those readers out there who do not know what “Goofy” is let me begin this post by detailing what those few, let us call them… insane people choose to do with a certain weekend in January. You see for the last seven years select people have decided that the first weekend in January will be spent feet upon the pavement of the World, Walt Disney World that is. On Saturday they wake early and head through Epcot and Magic Kingdom to conquer 13.1 miles. And because really who could stop at just 13.1 they decide to wake on Sunday and conquer the entire World in a mere 26.2 miles. Once the 26.2 miles are complete they are declared to be the Goofiest people in the World. Yes that is right 39.3 miles in a mere two days. Some run, others jog and then still others walk. No matter how you choose to take on the miles once you pass the finish line of the two races you will receive 3 medals. It is a challenge that many talk about and few do and even fewer finish. For it is not only the miles that keep the competitors low it is also the cost. For the pleasure of tackling the 39.3 you must pay the fee of $320 (by June 19, 2012), $350 (June 20- September 25, 2012), $380 (September 26 and after).

Competitors need to be strong of will, body, mind and pocketbook. As it has been documented here at Amanda’s Weekly Zen I have been working my way to being strong of body, will and mind and have completed my longest distance of 26.2 miles in a somewhat brutal 7 hours. Since that day this past January I have given thought as to whether or not I would attempt such a feet again. Many months I tried to persuade myself that 26.2 miles was enough and really why oh why was I such a “goof” to pay so much money for what others might call torture. After many months of watching the registration page of Goofy’s Race and Half Challenge fill up I finally came to a decision. I would be Goofy in 2013.My training for the challenge has begun and my hope is to be able to do 13.1 three days in a row without feeling pain in my feet or my knee.

If you are looking to register for the Goofy Half Race and Challenge, Walt Disney World Half Marathon or the Walt Disney World Marathon head over to RunDisney for current prices and information.

Yoga Bitch by Suzanne Morrison

Yoga Bitch: One Woman's Quest to Conquer Skepticism, Cynicism, and Cigarettes on the Path to EnlightenmentYoga Bitch: One Woman's Quest to Conquer Skepticism, Cynicism, and Cigarettes on the Path to Enlightenment by Suzanne Morrison

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What is it about yoga memoirs as of late? They are all deeply moving while at the same time being incredibly funny. I love it! Suzanne Morrison is fantastically funny and there is so much of her experience with her yoga teacher training that I can relate to. Although I have to say that there were no "piss drinkers" in my class (at least not that I know of... hmmm there was that one person whom I thought always smelled a little of... no, no I am pretty sure there were no piss drinkers in my yoga teacher training).

At one point while reading this book (I will admit it, it was when the farting in class came up in the book) that I was laughing so hard that my husband had to ask me what the heck I was doing and when I replied that I was reading about honking like Ganesha I think he sort of rolled his eyes.

Beside being truly entertaining this book spoke a little to the falseness yoga can sometimes foster in some of the students and teachers. I have to admit the more I paid for yoga the more disconnected I felt from my yoga. I dislike the commercialization of yoga and yet I make handmade yoga mat bags and sell them. I much like Morrison, feel that there is this HUGE contradiction in the way Americans (and most likely other people around the world) practice yoga. I have learned to accept that it is just a reality of life and of yoga. Some of us just feel the call of all the "shiny happy things" more than others.

Besides the cigarette smoking, I really like Morrison as a person (at least as the person she comes across in her writing I do not actually know her...). I learned a lot from her book, mainly that we really are all the same when it comes down to it, we even experience spiritual journeys in very similar ways.

Read this book to laugh, to think and to inspire you to make your practice your own.

The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides

The Marriage Plot
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I really liked this book. I had read other reviews before stating that it was pretentious and therefore the reader did not like it. This may sound odd but it was the pretentiousness that made me like it. If this book were a person it would be the type of person who had just went on some sort of spiritual quest and came back to intermingle with the rest of us knowing the secrets of the universe. Okay perhaps not really all the secrets of the universe but with each sentence that was slowly delivered to the reader the book gained confidence much like the hero in the novel when he first sees the break in the wall that the heroine put up. He knows it is only a matter of time before we fall in love with him and say yes to his proposal. That explicit subtly and it's pretentiousness is what made me like this book.

Well that and all the books. I cannot help liking a book that spends much of its time talking about books, reading books, writing about books. Yep when a novel spends as much time talking about books as this one did I cannot help it, I will ultimately fall in love with the novel.

The main plot, the "marriage plot" was an interesting take on a classic story line that is still used today. The ending seemed to be both a sarcastic statement about the marriage plot as well as a sincere, very heart felt look at the marriage plot. It was a brilliant novel. Read it when you have the time, it is worth it.
