So I have been surfing some of my favorite blogs and I have noticed quite a few of you have been preparing and listing summer reading. I personally have begun to compile a list of books I would like to read this summer. I have challenged myself to read 28 books this summer (14 weeks, 2 books a week). Now everyone reads at different paces and may set different summer reading goals, perhaps there is just one book you would like to read this summer that you have always wanted to read, perhaps you want to try a new genre. Whatever your goals, how about taking a challenge with me? I plan on starting my summer reading next week, but how about for an official challenge we start June 1.

Thanks CapnK8!

Thanks CapnK8!

Thanks Bella!

If you have summer reading challenge buttons ideas please email me with the img src and I will post them others to use.

Sounds like fun! I am not sure that I can read 2 books a week, but I can surely set a challenging goal for myself.
I'm in!
Love it! As a teacher it seems impossible to read during the year, this is a great idea.
BTW - Hope you enjoy reading Tom Robbins, he is v. cool (saw/met him once at a book signing, I stammered like an idiot "uh, I really like your writing...")
Sounds like fun. I don't think I'm quite as ambitious as you though...2 books a week is pushing it for me unless they're light chick lit. But I have some books I've been wanting to read.
Count me in. I think my goal is to eliminate the current backlog stacked on my shelf, but I might decide to try something new. My neighborhod book club meets tonight to decide whether we're meeting over the summer. . .
Fun, count me in!
I'm in, too! The books need not be fiction, yes? This is a great idea - Thanks, Amanda!
I'm in too, but with my life, I'm going to have to set a small goal, lilke a book a month.
Teabird-
The books you challenge yourself with this summer need not be fiction, you can decide what you would like to take on this summer. Since I love fiction myself my challenge just happens to include a ton of fiction.
Amanda :)
Normally, I'd challenge myself to something really tough, but I'm taking the Texas bar this summer. However, I have to keep reading in order to stay sane.
Count me in although it will be fairly easy. And let's do this again next summer!
All right, sounds good! I'm kidding myself that I can do two books a week - but I'll try!
-adrienne:)
Me, me!! I want to join the fun(especially since I already posted my list--lucky I found this to keep me on task).
I'm up for the challenge. Perhaps my personal challenge will be one book beyond my bookgroup selections for the month, that would be 3 per month. I'll think about it.
Count me in, Amanda. I commute an hour to work each way so my goal will have something to do with classics in audio versions.
KTC has revived my reading habit so this is a perfect challenge for summer 2006. Before KTC, it was all knitting, all the time.
Hi Amanda, sounds like fun i have some books on my shelf i`v been wanting to read count me in
Sounds like a great idea, Amanda! I'd love to make a dent in my TBR stack. Count me in.
Love this, love this!!!!! Next to knitting, reading is what I love! Count me in!
I'll be joining in, too. I am in the middle of Tom Robbins' latest and want to finish that and some others that are waiting.
Not sure I can read two a week, but I know I try to anyway. Count me in. Will have to ponder what to read...
Count me in, too! My summer is not really my "down" time but I definitely need a book challenge to get me going on a stack of books I've been wanting to read.
Count me in! I'm a college student, so I miss reading my own books during the school year. I can't wait to start compiling my list.
Definitely count me in! I think this is a great challenge.
I love this challenge. Put me down for two books per week but I reserve the right to adjust down after I reflect realistically on the number. I want the challenge but I want it attainable, too.
Count me in. I am not sure what would be a challenging goal for me, but ti sounds like fun.
sign me Up!
I'm all over this like a cow on grass. Sounds like fun!!!
Sign me up! My goal will not be 28 books for I only wish I had the time but I am going to go for 1 book a week- so 14 books. If I surpass 14 then I will treat myself to Haggan-Daas!!
I'm in...and I'm going on record as stating that I will read 1 of my classical books per week, for the 14 weeks.
Yup, on record. Oh damn.
mmmm, yummy books.
i sign me up. at least 2 a week. up with a baby til midnight...it makes quite reading time.
I love this idea - I am either reading or knitting all of the time. This will be a great challenge for me.
Ok...figured out my list! This was fun (writing the list) it will be a challenge (finishing the list)
http://paperclips.wordpress.com/2006/05/13/reading-fo/
I also made a button that can be found there too.
Hello! I think this is a fun idea and I am glad I came across your blog! I am in for one a week...I'm clearing a bit of a backlog.
www.thelibraryladder.blogspot.com
I'm in! Found the challenge through Heather at A High & Hidden Place and Amanda at The Blog Jar. Great idea!
yes, I am in...
Oops, and I should probably specify the blog where I'll be keeping track (since I have three)....
http://projectilereviews.blogspot.com
Count me in! I have a couple of shelves full of books that need to be read. It would be nice to have a clean bookshelf (I mean slate) before I start grad school in the fall.
Yes, count me in too! I have several books on my bookshelf that I plan to read. This challenge will give me that push!
Sounds like fun I'm in too.
Me too! I wanna play! I think 2 books a week is a little much for me, the knitting would suffer. I think I'll go with one a week. what a fun idea!
moved from blogger though, so i'll be posting here:
http://lissaslongyarn.typepad.com/
Count me in too, Amanda!
This sounds like a great idea. Count me in!
Hi Amanda:
This sounds like just the challenge I need for the summer. Please count me in at 1 book per week (which is ambitious considering I seem to never have any spare time, but I'll carve it in!)
Thanks for thinking of this!
Ceebie
I have to join you, I have a long summer vacation (6 1/2 weeks) ANd I plan to read a lot of books, I'll challenge my elf by reading some of them in english...List is comming up soon.
OH, Please add me too! I think one book a week would be a definate challenge for me!
Wonderful idea. I love reading but never seem to make enough time for my books these days. We are revamping our garden at the moment so hopefully by the summer it will be lovely and just perfect for spending a few undisturbed hours reading. I aim to read a book a week.
http://gorgeousknits.blogspot.com
this sounds like fun and a way to show my kids how important reading is!! I'm in!!
http://knotmaker.blogspot.com
Count me in too Amanda. I think I will set a goal of around 2 books a month. My challenge will be to decide which ones...
I'm in. My goal is to get the following three books read:
Elizabeth I
Long Ships
White Teeth
FYI - Tom Robbins is a GOD.
I would love to join the challenge!
Oh! I love it! I'm going to read some books off of my list! AND I'm going to listen to a book or two READ on my new iPod my girls got me for Mother's Day! Realistically? A book a week ...
THANK you!!!
Bea
This is going to be fun! I've updated my blog and posted a button, and I just finished dusting a new bookcase to put the books I still have in boxes. Yes, plural. I'll probably need two more bookcases, unless I eBay what I know I'm not reading or reading again. ;)
Count me in.... off to figure out my goal!
I would love to take the challenge and pick up my left-handed knitting again.
:-)
I'm in. I've cut back my reading time so drastically due to increased knitting time, it will be good to set some goals so that some reading gets done.
Count me in! Not sure on the commitment level yet, but possibly around 1 book a week. This is where insomnia comes in handy.
I'm in! My regular blog is at:
Random Meanderings and my book blog is at Read-o-rama.
I'm going to challenge myself to read two books a week, ideally one fiction one non fiction. This should be fun!
Awesome! Please count me in. I've been way behind in my reading, so I think I'll try for a book a week (14 for the summer).
Count me in.
Sorry I posted before I finished. I would love to join, we do summer reading program at the library for my kids, so this will be my program. My goal will be a book a week.
Ok, I'm biting. I'm going to do 28 books but within certain parameters. You can see them listed here.
Sassymonkey Reads
My friend Melissa is also doing a challenge but she's not a blogger member so here's her link:
Oil on Ice
I'd love to join it. I can read, probably, I hope ... one book a week. Oh, how I miss the days of not working when I could read a book a *day*
Blog address is off my profile. :)
This sounds great! Just what I need to kick-start my summer reading!
When the new year began I told myself I would read a book a month. So far I have read only one book and it is May. I am really disappointed in myself.
I'd like to join.
I know that two books a week would never happen for me, but for the summer- I will aim for one book every three weeks.
My goal is still to have read 12 (fiction) books by the end of the year. Maybe this will help get me back on track.
Please add me too!
i have missed being in a book discussion group-this sounds great-
summer is my busy work season
but i will give it my best effort
Can I play too? I am not sure if you got my last comment or not. I will be posting at www.smoochdog.com and not on my blogger account.
Amanda--
A great way to have an online book club and learn about a wide variety of books!! Thanks for organizing this challenge!
My goal = 3 books per month
http://yarnknitreadlit.blogspot.com
:)
Count me in--I want to try to read a book a week.
http://www.needlenorth.blogspot.com
OK. I'm officially in ofr one book a week (not counting text books.) I'll post the button tonight, along with my picks. ;)
Ok...I'll try to read 2 books per 4 week renewal cycle at my public library! Just wish I had the ability to knit and read at the same time - lololol!
:)
I love this challenge. Count me in!
I plan to read the first two books of the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon
Outlander & Dragonfly in Amber
They are both real thick so should be a challenge for me.
I'm definitely in! Just what I need to get me reading all those books I feel I SHOULD have read already!
I'm in!
I need to read more of the books I sell to parents and kids at work, so I'm going to read
1 Beginning Reader
1 Picture book
1 Chapter book
1 Young Reader novel
1 Teen novel
1 Graphic novel for kids
and
1 Non-fiction book for kids
each month - and all need to be from an author or series I haven't read yet.
The True Confessions of an Hourly Bookseller
I stumbled across this on another blog and I think it sounds like a ton of fun! I'm going to challenge myself to read 10 books off my bookshelves that I've never read (there's many more than 10!)
My blog is actually at http://serendipitious-turtle.typepad.com/- I just signed up with a Blogger name in order to comment on the blogs...
Just what I need to get back on track - I'm still reading, but I've neglected to update my reading list for the last month. Thanks for coming up with this.
Even though I've always loved books, I've really only 'allowed' myself time to read fairly recently. Being a knitter, spinner and stitcher, I really *need* to make time to read or it gets left behind. I'd love to join this challenge.
I'm thinking 100 pages a week would be good for me. I'd like to say 2 books per month but some books are thicker than others. He! Yep, 100 pages a week.
Count me in!
My blog:
www.pagesturned.blogspot.com
Do audio books count? I was planning on making full use of our public library this summer -- wouldn't want funding for them to drop.
Two mysteries a week.
This is a great idea. I'll have to come up with a goal.
Genia-
Absolutely audio books count, welcome!
Amanda
I would like to join in! I need to do some real reading. Knitting is starting to get in the way of my reading!
This sounds like right up my alley. I always read during the summer. Have to figure out what I want to read and a challenge but at least 1 book/week.
Tess
araygirl.blogspot.com
I'm in. Now I have to get off my stupid blog and do some real life reading. :)
I'll post my goals at my blog. Thanks for the challenge. Now if I can only set goals and not get distracted from them by other bookish rabbit trails.
Amanda, I'm in! My goal is 14 books. The challenge is to read half NONfiction... normally I read mostly fiction. Thanks for the inspiration!
My list is here:
http://jennhx.com/2006/05/23/summer-reading-challenge/
This sounds like fun! I'll try to read one book a week. I'll post my list on my blog. :( I don't know how to "take a button" LOL
hi! it's me again!. I figured out how to "take a button" LOL I hope one doesn't have to be a knitter to join!

I would like to go for 2 books a month (if I do more I'll brag!) -
Oops, I forgot - two books a month from my own bookcases! I have way too many books...
http://fabricnfiberfanatic.blogspot.com
What a great way for me to dive into reading all those books that linger on my shelf. I have tendency to check books out from the libray though I know I have so many to read at home. Go figure. I will commit to one book a week and will try for two!
my blog: http://tonguetiedmuse.blogspot.com/
I'll join! I have just been compiling my summer list, so I will post it at my blog soon.
Sounds great.

Hey, what a fun idea. I'm in!
Whoa, 91 comments already!! I have to join since reading hits right up there with knitting for me. I wish I could them at the same time, but alas, I have to watch my stitches. Tammy at http://www.lavendarknits.blogspot.com/
This might be just what I need to get going with books that I've been meaning to read for ages, so count me in too! Thanks, L.
Oh, boy! I'm in. I have a bunch of stuff to read, all of which actually relates to my field.
Hi, I am signing up for this one! I would like to commit to more, but I think that 12 books (3 per month) will be a do-able # for me!
Hi everyone, I just posted my Challenge list HERE.
What a great idea! I read a fair amount, and have one of my blogs dedicated to the books I read, with brief reviews so I'll be using that one - http://suesbookreviews.blogspot.com
During the summer it's so hot that I usually read more than I do in the rest of the year, but we're moving house at the start of July, so... maybe 2 per week on average is about right.
Hi, I would like to join as my reading has gone down the more kniting I do. To rectify this, I started bookcrossing last year and it has helped a bit but I seem to procure more and more books now.
I will try and read 2 books a week from my bookcrossing TBR pile.
www.bookcrossing.com/veganknitter
I'd like to join. My goal is one book a week.

I believe I will joing as well. My goal is a new book a week, not one I have read before. And as a separate goal to keep on track for my book reading group. Which means I must catch up before.
I'll join you all!
A book a week, plus The Count of Monte Cristo.
Crissy

I'm Miz Booshay.
www.booshay.blogspot.com
Thanks for the encouragement!
I'm in... funny, a few years ago, a few friends had a similar challenge to read one book a week for a year, which I balked at, having forgotten how to gift myself with time to read... now, it's no problem! :) I'm planning to read 28 books from my TBR shelf... (editable list to be found later on my blog)... Can't wait to start!
Count me in! Haven't made up my list yet, but probably 2/month.
Will post about what I read at:
Cam's Commentary www.camreading.blogspot.com
This is a great idea!
I'm in Cay! Sounds wonderful!!! My summers are spent with book perpetually in hand!
I was browsing for Book Blogs this morning, and came across your Summer Reading Challenge. Of course, I'd *heard* of it through my online book friends, but didn't think I'd join in...
Until I did so without even KNOWING I did! LOL... I was frustrated with the way my reading has been going this year, so I determined to read a set number of books each month for June, July & August...
And, voila! Here I am! I'm signing up, too!
http://mizbooks.blogspot.com
(and see my reads at...
http://mizbooksreads.blogspot.com )
Oh, this sounds like fun. I'll join in! I'm in the middle of C.S. Lewis' "Surprised By Joy" right now. I'm going to set my goal at 12 books after that one.
Awesome!
I'm up for a challenge -- with my littles, I'm only going to commit to one book a week....
I'll be posting progress on my blog: http://saacademy.blogspot.com/

Please count me in! I homeschool year round...so one book a month for me.
I'm in. Adding the link to my blog now.
My challenge is to read my way across one whole bookshelf. Average bookself in thsi house holds 50 books.

GREAT idea! Why do we only set reading challenges for our kids? I'll have to think a couple days about the list, but I'll borrow a button in the next day or so when I've figured out what to read. Thanks for the jumpstart.
I would LOVE to join the group!! I will be home for a couple of weeks recuperating from surgery & had planned to catch up on my reading. This will insure I do so.
So, a book a week it is.
List will be published on my blog later.
Namaste'
I need to make myself make time to read. Maybe this will help! My blogs are rkthinkingoutloud.blogspot.com and www.xanga.com/capnk8. Can we contribute recommendations to the list?
Me too! What a fabulous idea!!! I've been so bored with tv lately and I love to read anyway, so I'll join everyone else. Maybe I'll actually finish the book I'm currently reading. And I'll go for the 28 books because I seem to just breathe books in. My husband is always commenting on how fast I read. :-)
I hope I am not too late! Count me in! I will get a list together for tonight. I can be found at homeschoolblogger/schoolmommy3/
Thanks
Tracey
I'm totally in since I've been trying to read more anyway. So count on me to jump on the bandwagon totally late.
Count me in!
Count me in! My goal is to focus on books on my bookshelf that I've never read. Oh, in addition to reading the books on the bookshelf I need to organize & purge books - more books than shelves.

This sounds great! The day before I found out about this challenge I had just set a goal for myself, so this is perfect. I also just started my own blog, so am happy to have one more thing to write about. Thanks for putting this together!
My blog is at: http://needleanddistaff.blogspot.com/
Hi Amanda - Can I still sign up? Please... As usual I'm just waiting until the last minute. My reading challenge is one book a week, only from my stacks. No library books allowed. Hopefully this way I can cull down my ever growing piles :)
Count me in!
Sounds fun to me! I love to read and have sadly become way out of practice! Perhaps this will be a way to get back into the habit and get the old brain working again. For the time being i am going to commit to one book a week. I used to read a book a day, but i want to be realistic and i know life isnt always going to permit to that one. So yeah..one book a week.
